The French Pyrénées are among the best sites in Europe for birdwatching.

The aim of this page is to show the diversity of birds seen over the years and which might still be seen

without leaving a site which is highly recommended by the author – why else would we be guests for all these years?

Snakes are the main prey of this eagle which has been seen over the peak above the site.

Fairly common and used to be easy to find at Pibeste when the refuse site was in use there.

Most likely to be seen during migration and more common on the Spanish side of the mountains. If you see a falcon catching dragonflies it will almost certainly be a Hobby.

Frequently heard in the fields above the site, this is a resident species. The picture is of a young speckly bird

Less vocal than the Green Woodpecker, this bird can usually be found among the trees at the top of the site.

Seen in 2014 in the trees at the top of the site, worth looking out for – this is a very interesting sighting. Confirmed breeding in 2017 in the woods just above the site.

A regular garden bird and found around the site. Unconcerned by sharing the site with people. The song is much louder than you would expect from such a small bird.

The beautiful, powerful, song of this bird is heard more often than the bird is seen. It likes to sing in the spring from deep cover and is rarely seen later in the year.

Le chant magnifique et puissant de cet oiseau est entendu plus souvent qu'on ne le voit. Il aime chanter au printemps à partir d'une couverture profonde et est rarement vu plus tard dans l'année.

In September 2015 a few of these birds stayed at the top of the site until all the berries of Common Dogwood were gone and then they moved on.

One of the more common summer visitors. Identified by having no noticeable stripes, spots or anything else!

This bird can often be overlooked if it's not singing, it likes to skulk in deep cover, seen mainly on migration.

Cet oiseau peut souvent passer inaperçu s'il ne chante pas, car il aime se cacher dans des endroits profonds,vu principalement lors de la migration.

A regular summer visitor this bird should be easy to see. The female has a brown “cap”.

Often found in bushes beside a stream or river, this bird often sings from the top of extensive thickets.

A common visitor and very easy to confuse with the Willow Warbler. It's easy in the spring when the birds sing as this calls its name over and over.

The tiny Goldcrest is a bird of higher ground and is rare in the valleys, but it has been seen on site in Luz.

In the autumn these are not as common as the Pied Flycatcher but sometimes join in their flocks.

The picture was taken in autumn when they are common; in the spring the males are strikingly black and white.

Commonly seen in autumn 2016 on the top terrace of the site. Easily attracted to a feeder of sunflower seeds, but, then not seen until 2021 which was another good year.

Bait the tree with peanuts, fat or cheese and this will be the result; English cheddar will bring the best birds!

An unobtrusive bird, it looks like a mouse climbing up the tree. The Eurasian Treecreeper is a high-altitude bird and its Short-toed cousin can be seen lower down.

Un oiseau discret, qui ressemble à une souris grimpant dans l'arbre. Le grimpereau d'Europe est un oiseau de haute altitude, tandis que son cousin à bec court peut être observé plus bas.

A woodland bird with white rump and bright blue feathers in the wings. Likely to be seen collecting acorns in the autumn, it is a shy bird.

A very small finch with a distinctive tinkling song, the yellow rump when it flies will identify it.

Easy to recognise with a red face in the adult and gold flashes in the wings, this finch can be found around the site.

Less common than the other finches but Bullfinches have been seen from the highest parts of the site.

A bird of farmland and open country but sometimes seen around the site.
